Inheritance:Most cases of down syndrome is not inherited. When the condition is caused by trisomy 21 the chromosomal abnormality occurs as a ran down event during the formation of reproductive cells. The abnormality usually occurs in egg cells but it occasionally occurs in sperm. An error in cell division called nondisjunction results in reproductive cell with an abnormal number of chromosomes. For example an egg or sperm cell may gain an extra copy of chromosomes 21. On of the atypical reproductive cell contributes to the genetic make up of a child the child will have an extra chromosome21 in each of the body cells.

Diagnosis:Down syndrome can be diagnosed two different ways. One way that you can be diagnosed with down syndrome is during pregnancy. One other way is shortly after birth of the baby. The Diagnoses is always based on the presence of an extra 21 chromosome on a karyotype. The diagnose of down syndrome is usually made soon after birth because of some subtle difference in the babies appearance. Children with down syndrome have a distinctive facial feature and physical characteristics that may lead your doctor to suspect that your baby has down syndrome.
Treatment:
Down syndrome is not a condition that can be cured. The goal of down syndrome treatment are to control the symptoms and manage any resulting medical conditions. Treatment for down syndrome can include: Regular checkups and screening, medications, surgery, and counseling support.
Research:
Research being conducted are medical tests. Pills are another way and even pregnancy test. They are doing research to identify the structure and function
Additional Facts:
Some additional facts are that 1 out of 2000 out of every baby gets down syndrome. They have special classes for these kids. In 97 of trissomy21 cases the additional chromosomes comes from the mothers egg rather than the fathers sperm. When talking it allows them to gain control over their social and emotional world.
